Abstinence is considered the best method of birth control and is usually recommended, but taking "The Pill" is probably one of the most common and largely used birth control methods. This kind of oral contraceptive contains estrogen and progestin and must be taken at the same time every day to give protection against pregnancy.

The birth control patch is one of the newer birth control methods that has been picking up in popularity among women. That's because unlike the pill, a birth control patch is a once a week contraceptive option.

The small patch is placed directly on the skin of the abdomen, upper torso, outer upper arm or buttocks and releases hormones that stop the ovaries from producing eggs. This along with the thickening of cervical mucus means that the chance of pregnancy is relatively small.

No birth control methods can completely prevent pregnancy except abstinence, but most offer women an excellent degree of protection from pregnancy. Most birth control methods also don't protect against sexually transmitted diseases so condom use is highly recommended.
